Vegas Play of the Day: PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic

Brian Harman

Brian Harman gives a thumbs-up to a cheering gallery as he walks off the 18th hole after finishing with two holes-in-one in the final round of play at the Barclays golf tournament Sunday, Aug. 30, 2015, in Edison, N.J. Harman hit a hole-in-one on the third hole and again on the 14th hole.

The sixth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2018-19 and 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

First round score — Brian Harman plus-105 vs. Zach Johnson: $900 to win $945

Man, these golf matchups are getting me in trouble early in the new season of the Play of the Day. And yet….I can’t quit them.

Here we go again, desperately attempting to not fall to 0-3.

This is a fade against those who overrate course history. Johnson is priced a little high in the market because of his past success here at TPC Deere Run.

He won the John Deere Classic in 2012 before following it with a pair of runner-ups. But I’m more concerned with recent form, and right now, Harman is better than him.

This is a mismatch in that regard as Harman has a pair of top 10s in his last three tournaments. Johnson doesn’t have a top 10 since November.

I’m not laying a price simply because a player performed well on this course years ago. The present is more important.

Current Standings: Grimala (1-0, $9,800), Brewer (0-1, $9,560), Emerson (0-1, $9,300), Keefer (1-2, $8,520)

Case Keefer can be reached at 702-948-2790 or [email protected]. Follow Case on Twitter at twitter.com/casekeefer.
