Vegas Play of the Day: Arizona State at Oregon State

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Oregon State minus-4 vs. Arizona State: $330 to win $300

This might as well be an NCAA Tournament at-large elimination game, as both teams are long shots but still might have a chance to get into the 68-team field by finishing the year strong. The consensus is that Arizona State is slightly ahead of Oregon State at the moment.

Don’t think the Beavers haven’t realized that. This is their chance to show they’re the better team, and yes, they probably are the better team.

They nearly came back and beat the Sun Devils in the teams’ first meeting this season, losing 70-67 at Wells Fargo Arena as underdogs. They’ve improved since then, however, and may be undervalued by virtue of going an unlucky 2-5 in games decided by a single possession.

The Beavers have the best player in the game, if not the conference, in Tres Trinkle and are the more experienced team. They should rise to the occasion in what’s a big game for both programs.

Four points appears to be a negligible number to lay.

Current Standings: Keefer (27-25-2, $10,266), Brewer (17-17-2, $9,060) Emerson (3-3, $6,242), Grimala (16-16-1, $4,350)
