Police release name of officer who shot and killed man Sunday

The officer who shot and killed a man Sunday during a scuffle in the 3700 block of Shirebrook Drive have been identified as Sgt. David Valenta, Metro police said today. Another officer, Detective Darren Schwartz, was also involved in the shooting, police said.

The two officers were talking to a man, identified by the coroner's office as Anthony Antwan Davis, 24, of Lancaster, Calif., about 11:55 p.m. He began walking away from them and pulled out a handgun, police said.

Davis fired once. Police said the sergeant fired his weapon once, striking David in the head and killing him.

Valenta is 36 years old and has been employed with Metro Police since 1996.

Schwartz is 31 years old and has been employed with Metro since 1999.

Both are currently assigned to the Gang Crimes Bureau.
