Nellis pilot dies in jet fighter crash

UPDATE: Nellis identifies pilot who died in crash

A pilot from Nellis Air Force Base died today in a crash of a U.S. Air Force F-15D Eagle on the Nevada Test and Training Range about 50 miles east of Goldfield, the base said.

The F-15D two-seater, assigned to the 65th Aggressor Squadron at Nellis, was participating in a combat training mission as part of a Red Flag exercise. The crash occurred at about 11:30 a.m.

Another pilot from the aircraft was taken to Mike O'Callaghan Federal Hospital at Nellis at about 1:30 p.m. The second pilot is under observation and is in stable condition.

Both pilots were assigned to the 65th Aggressor Squadron. Its mission is to simulate opposing enemy air forces during Red Flag exercises.

The names of the pilots involved are being withheld pending notification of family.

A board is being formed to investigate the cause of the crash.
