Man charged with DUI after pedestrian struck, killed

Pedestrian killed

A Las Vegas man was charged with DUI on Saturday after a 77-year-old man crossing East Fremont Street outside of a marked crosswalk was struck and killed by a pickup truck, Metro Police said.

The incident happened about 8:10 p.m. Friday between East Oakey Boulevard and Atlantic Street, police said.

Evidence and witness statements indicate the pedestrian was crossing Fremont east to west, just south of the entrance to a Lowe’s Home Improvement store, when he was hit by a Chevrolet Silverado headed south on Fremont through a green light, police said. He was not in a crosswalk, police said.

The pedestrian, whose name was not released pending notification of his family, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, identified as 38-year-old Eduardo Mendez, was arrested on a charge of DUI, police said.

The death marked the 24th fatal traffic accident in Metro’s jurisdiction this year. The incident is under investigation by Metro’s Accident Investigation Detail.
