Cooler weather this winter generated more profit for Southwest Gas Corp. of Las Vegas.
The company, serving customers in Nevada, Arizona and California, today said it earned $64.7 million or $1.42 per share in 2010’s first quarter, up from $49.981 million or $1.12 per share in the year-ago quarter.
Operating revenue, however, fell slightly from $689.9 million to $668.75 million.
Operating margin, operating revenue less the cost of gas sold, increased $23 million in the first quarter of 2010. Cooler weather compared with the winter of 2009 provided $13 million of the operating margin increase, with rate relief adding another $10 million.
