Google: $509 million generated in Nevada last year

Google issued a report today saying it generated $54 billion in economic activity in 2009 for U.S. businesses, website publishers and nonprofits -- including $509 million in Nevada.

The Internet company issued its first report detailing its economic impact nationwide and breaking out results by state.

Google said there were 17,000 businesses in Nevada that benefited from Google advertising, either by advertising on Google or by placing Google advertising on their websites.

The company said 10 Nevada nonprofits benefited from "Google Grants," Google’s in-kind donation program awarding free "AdWords" advertising. Google said it donated $238,000 worth of free advertising to Nevada nonprofits in 2009.

"People think of Google first and foremost as a search engine, but it’s also an engine of economic growth for business in Nevada and across the country," Claire Johnson, vice president of global online sales for Google, said in a statement.

Google isn't alone in selling online advertising and search services.

One of its competitors, Yahoo! Inc., reported that in the first quarter, revenue of $1.58 billion included sales from display advertising, search advertising and click-throughs on content match links.
