GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. — Authorities at Grand Canyon National Park say a body has been recovered from below the canyon's South Rim.

Park rangers received notification from the Arizona Department of Public Safety that a man might be on his way to the Grand Canyon with the intent of harming himself Monday afternoon.

They began looking for the man or his vehicle throughout the South Rim area.

At about 5:30 p.m. Monday, rangers spotted what appeared to be a body some 400 feet below the rim a few miles east of Duck on a Rock on Desert View Drive.

The body was recovered, carried up to the rim and transferred to the Coconino County medical examiner.

Park officials say the person's name is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of relatives.
