House fire turns fatal

A woman pulled from a burning condominium earlier today in the northwest valley has died at University Medical Center, Las Vegas Fire and Rescue spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

The woman, in her early 60s, apparently was overcome by smoke, Szymanski said. A dog also died in the fire, which might have been caused by careless smoking, he said.

The fire occurred about 12:03 p.m. in a bedroom of the home at 6464 Melody Rose Ave., near North Torrey Pines Drive and West Lake Mead Boulevard.

The fire started in bedroom, which was gutted, and caused smoke damage throughout the rest of the unit. Damage was estimated at $60,000.

The American Red Cross was assisting the woman's roommate, who was not home at the time of the fire, Szymanski said.
