First-time Nevada unemployment filings climb

First-time claims for jobless benefits in Nevada rose in April to 17,661, or 2,220 more than in March, the state reported Tuesday.

But the claims are smaller than the 18,327 filed in April last year.

Bill Anderson, chief economist for the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, said that claims have fallen in 38 of the past 41 months compared with the same month of the preceding year.

“This continues to suggest that while Nevada’s economy is on the road to recovery, significant room for improvements remains,” Anderson said.

The initial claims for unemployment benefits reached their peak of 36,414 in December 2008. Since then, the low point has been 13,932 in September 2012.

The department will issue its monthly unemployment report later this week.
