Long ball can’t save 51s in loss to Salt Lake

Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Collin Cowgill hit back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning Saturday night for the Las Vegas 51s, but it wasn’t enough in a 7-5 loss to the Salt Lake Bees at Cashman Field.

The consecutive home runs were the last runs the 51s scored, and Salt Lake scored three times in the fifth inning to take the lead for good. Chris Schwinden took the loss for Las Vegas (22-25), surrendering six runs on eight hits in five innings.

Nieuwenhuis led the 51s with two runs and two hits.

The teams continue their Pacific Coast League series at 12:05 p.m. Sunday and Monday.
