The Big Squeeze Begins

Traffic flows smoothly on the first morning of The Big Squeeze lane closures related to Project Neon a nearly $1 billion 3.7-mile-long widening of Interstate 15 from the U.S. 95 interchange to Sahara Avenue on Tuesday, March 21, 2017.

The Nevada Department of Transportation recently unveiled two improved ways people access road and traffic information online.

In conjunction with the nearly $1 billion Project Neon, a 3.7-mile-long widening of Interstate 15 from the U.S. 95 interchange to Sahara Avenue, NDOT released a smartphone app to keep motorists up to date.

Developed by Kiewit Corp., the free Project Neon app (for Apple and Android products) features an interactive project map, with detailed road closures and construction activity. Users can also review project facts, photos, videos and scheduled milestones associated with the project.

Additional links, contact information and social media posts from NDOT are also featured. Real-time push notifications for major project activities and traffic impacts are also available to those who want alerts.

“This is the department’s first mobile app,” NDOT spokesman Tony Illia said. "It’s a significant commitment toward keeping the public informed about Project Neon. We realize the importance of embracing new digital media tools and techniques for effectively communicating with residents and visitors.”

Earlier this month NDOT debuted a redesigned website that offers quicker and easier access to state road information.

The site offers an updated navigation style with six quick-link buttons giving viewers instant access to traveler, business, NDOT road project, highway stormwater preservation and commercial vehicle information.

Additionally, a new “Safe and Connected” link takes users to information about traffic safety and alternative transportation modes.

The website still features up-to-the minute road conditions, live video feeds for major freeways, road weather reports, public-involvement opportunities, job openings and maps. Business support, including road-use permit forms and information on contracting with NDOT, is included.

This is the first update to NDOT’s website since 2011. Frequent web visitors are urged to clear website caches and update any bookmarks to the nevadadot.com site for easier access to the new site.
