Nevada bill making bestiality a crime moves forward

Bestiality isn’t outlawed in eight states including Nevada, and state lawmakers are working to change that.

Assembly Bill 391 would create the crime of bestiality in the state. The bill passed out of committee the day before Friday's deadline.

Assemblyman Richard Carrillo, D-Las Vegas, sponsored the measure, which passed with input from the Humane Society of the United States.

The Associated Press reported in March that Hawaii, Kentucky, New Mexico, Texas, Vermont, West Virginia, Wyoming and the District of Columbia also do not outlaw bestiality.

A violation of the proposed law would be a gross misdemeanor, with escalating penalties in cases where the animal is seriously injured or dies, and if the perpetrator has been convicted of animal cruelty in the past.
