A man severely wounded in a random knife attack that left another person dead last week has succumbed to his injuries, according to Metro Police.

Police said they were notified Monday evening that a 52-year-old man attacked Wednesday in an alley in the 4400 block of East Charleston Boulevard, had died. The man’s name has not yet been released.

“The Clark County district attorney has been made aware and will amend the charges accordingly,” police said in a statement.

The suspect, Richi Briones, 32, also fatally stabbed Balente Gonzalez, 31, at a convenience store at Lamb Boulevard and Bonanza Road, police said. Gonzalez was at the check-out counter when Briones grabbed him from behind and stabbed him multiple times, police said.

Briones was originally booked on counts including murder, attempted murder and battery with a deadly weapon, police said.

Police said the attacks were random and described Briones as “crazed.” He was heard rambling incoherently, mentioning something about a cartel and drugs, police said.

When questioned by detectives, Briones said he hadn’t slept the previous night because he had smoked meth and was worried that “the cartel was coming for him,” according to an arrest report.
