Man wakes up to find his bed on fire

A sleeping man who awoke to find his bed on fire suffered burns as he tried to drag the blazing mattress outside, while a neighbor cut himself escaping through a window, according to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials.

Firefighters were called about 9:50 p.m. Wednesday to the Oasis Ridge Apartments, 3040 E. Charleston Blvd., after people heard glass breaking and saw smoke coming from a second-floor apartment, officials said. They found a mattress on fire on a walkway outside an apartment, officials said.

Firefighters put out the blaze within a couple of minutes and prevented it from spreading, officials said. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

A man told investigators he was sleeping and awoke to the fire, officials said. He tried to pull the mattress outside, but it got stuck on the walkway, officials said.

A man in a neighboring apartment saw the fire and tried to escape, but his door was blocked by the burning mattress, officials said. He broke a window to get out and cut his hand, officials said. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

About an hour later, the occupant of the apartment where the fire started complained that his feet hurt, officials said. He was taken to the hospital with minor burns to the bottom of his feet, officials said.

Damage was estimated at $50,000, officials said.
