Metro: Fatal New Year’s Day shooting may have been accidental

Updated Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017 | 5:02 p.m.

A woman was killed today in Metro Police's first homicide of 2017.

According to a Metro news release, at approximately 4:30 a.m., police responded to a report of a shooting in a parked car in the 3800 block of Cambridge Avenue, near Maryland Parkway and East Twain Avenue.

Officers arrived at the car to find an injured woman, along with one other woman and two men the women had met at a New Year’s Eve event. The injured woman was transported to the Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.

Investigators believe a firearm was being handled inside the car when it accidentally fired, striking the woman, Metro said.

No arrests have been made, although Metro said the incident is still being investigated and they plan to submit the case to the Clark County District Attorney’s office for review and consideration of criminal charges.

The woman’s name and age and the cause of death will be released at a later time by the Clark County Coroner’s Office.
