Henderson begins national search for police chief

Henderson has launched a national search for a police chief following the May removal of Patrick Moers, who’d been a target of an internal investigation.

The applications, which are being handled by a California law firm, are being accepted until July 24. For more information, visit here.

“The city is looking for candidates with the right combination of leadership experience and law-enforcement training,” said Henderson City Manager Bob Murnane in a news release. “This is a national search, but we are open to considering both internal and external applicants. … The ideal candidate will also inspire trust and confidence in our community and the employees of the Henderson Police Department he or she will lead as chief.”

Moers was ousted as chief amid an investigation into him sending out mailers to local businesses promoting a foundation he had called the department’s only authorized fundraising group, the Associated Press reported.

City officials had refused to say whether Moers had been fired or placed on administrative leave. Officials would also not discuss whether the move was linked to the internal investigation of Moers.

He had sent the mailer from a foundation titled "Friends of the Henderson Police Department Foundation," according to the AP. Todd Peters is currently the acting police chief.

Candidate requirements:

Fifteen years of “progressively responsible law enforcement experience, including five years of mid-to-upper-level management in a police department.

Bachelor’s degree with a major in criminal justice, police science, law enforcement, public or business administration, or a “closely related field.”

“An equivalent combination of related training and experience may be considered.”

The position pays $125,000 to $193,823, plus an executive benefits package.

The Henderson police department employs 627 people, including 434 sworn officers, and it operates a budget of roughly $116 million.
