Rivalries galore

Hammer, bell, bowl, bulls, roses and more. Ray Brewer and Case Keefer discus the numerous rivalry games taking place across the valley in this week's slate of high school football games.

After four straight blowout wins, Sierra Vista was finally put to the test Friday night against Durango.

The Mountain Lions passed, notching a 34-26 win despite falling into an early 12-0 deficit.

“It was kind of nice to be behind and test the grit of our team and put them in that situation,” Sierra Vista coach John Foss said.

Running backs Isaiah Zavala and Bryan LaGrange responded to the adversity, as they each scored twice for Sierra Vista and led a 27-point second quarter that pulled it away from Durango. Kaika Faatiliga had the Mountain Lions’ other touchdown to widen a gap that the Trailblazers could never close.

Although Foss was pleased with Sierra Vista’s resolve, he said they had an overall sloppy performance.

“We need to cut down on our mental mistakes and personal fouls,” Foss said.
