On paper, this should be a week of high school football games not decided until the fourth quarter.

Sunrise Region power Liberty faces a tough test in its Southeast League opener at undefeated Green Valley; Faith Lutheran visits Legacy in a battle of two Northwest League contenders; the 3A Sunset League opens with Sunrise Mountain at Mojave in a game that also appears to be evenly matched. All games were moved to tonight in observance of the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur on Friday.

Liberty has just one loss to a Sunrise opponent in the past seven years, but Green Valley definitely has the Patriots’ attention. The Gators have scored 154 points in four games, and senior quarterback AJ Barilla has passed for 947 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Faith Lutheran players are full of confidence after erasing a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit last week for a win at Palo Verde, but Legacy’s balanced offense won’t be easy to contain. Aubrey Washington has 483 rushing yards and eight touchdowns for the Longhorns (4-1), including 160 yards against Palo Verde and 164 versus Centennial in Northwest League games.

In the 3A Sunset League, defending state champion Desert Pines visits Pahrump Valley to open league play. The Jaguars are expected to again win the Sunset, meaning every game is crucial in the battle for the three final playoff spots.

That’s especially true for Mojave and Sunrise Mountain, which are believed to be the second and third best teams in the Sunset. They’ve had one common opponent in Moapa Valley. Mojave beat Moapa Valley last week, and Sunrise Mountain narrowly lost in Overton to open the season. Considering it’s tough to win at Moapa Valley, it’s easy to see why Mojave-Sunrise Mountain is expected to be closely contested.

The area’s top team, eight-time defending 4A state champion Bishop Gorman, hosts Spring Valley. Northwest League power Arbor View puts its undefeated record on the line at Centennial.

We’ll keep everyone posted as scores become final. Check back later for more.
