A 16-hour standoff at a central Las Vegas apartment ended when a Metro Police SWAT team breached the unit and fatally shot a man who had fired rounds toward them throughout the incident.

The man, who expressed he wasn’t coming out and wanted to die, was shot about 1:15 p.m. in the area of Baltimore and Fairfield avenues, police said.

The investigation began about 9:30 p.m. Friday when a woman flagged down a patrol officer in the area, saying she’d been kidnapped and raped, police said. Detectives were summoned to the apartment the suspect was believed to be in.

Two people exited the apartment and informed officials the man remained inside, police said. Detectives talked to that man through the door until he suddenly fired a round in their direction, police said. Metro SWAT and crisis negotiators were then called.

Through the night and into the morning, negotiators and the man communicated over the phone, and they’d tried to get him to surrender, police said. But he’d refused, opening fire multiple times.

It wasn’t immediately clear how many times the man opened fire or how many rounds he shot, but after attempting multiple non-lethal methods to apprehend him, police decided on raiding the apartment, officials said.

About 1:15 p.m., police breached and entered, fatally shooting the man, police said.

As of Saturday night, the investigation remained in its initial stages, and a sequence of events inside the apartment that led to the officer-involved shooting wasn’t clear, police said.

The man, who was the same suspect in the suspected kidnapping and rape, died at the scene, police said. It was the 11th officer involved shooting of 2018 for Metro.
