The 51s could become the Las Vegas Aviators next season. Or maybe not, team officials said Tuesday.
Don Logan, the Triple-A baseball club’s president and chief operating officer, said the Aviators are one of five possible names in consideration as the organization rebrands for its 2019 move from downtown Las Vegas to the new Las Vegas Ballpark in Downtown Summerlin.
The Las Vegas Aviators surfaced Monday as a possible option, as 20 trademark filings were made June 6 by the Summerlin Las Vegas Baseball Club, LLC. Logan said the trademark filings were to prevent “cyber poaching” in the event that someone tried to put a hold on those names when the five finalists were announced in hopes of a monetary gain.
“Our (Howard Hughes) corporate office did that,” Logan said. “I didn’t even know what that meant until they explained it to me yesterday. People try to guess what names teams will choose and make the team buy it from them in order for them to use it.”
The organization received about 2,500 suggestions from fans in a contest which ended April 30. It plans to roll out the top five names, Aviators included, for fans to vote for their final choice. Logan wouldn’t reveal the other four names.
In addition to moving into a new $150 million, 10,000-seat stadium for the 2019 season, the 51s will also change their major league affiliation. The player development agreement with the Mets will conclude at the end of the season — the Mets have already announced their Triple-A affiliate will be in Syracuse, N.Y., beginning in 2019.
