Members of the Bishop Gorman football team pose at the Las Vegas Sun’s high school football media day Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at Red Rock Resort. They include, from left, Falcon Kaumatule, Cade Briggs, Amod Cianelli, Beau Taylor and Kyu Kelly.

When the nine-time defending state champion Bishop Gorman High football team lost three of its initial four games, many observers around Las Vegas sensed the Gaels dynasty could be winding down.

Those defeats, of course, came against opponents ranked in the national top-20. But they haven’t lost since, including opening the playoffs tonight with a 70-7 victory against visiting Basic.

It, arguably, was the best Gorman has played all season, coach Kenny Sanchez said. After all, his players were motivated to silence their skeptics.

“They have been hearing how they are going to lose, and how someone will upset them,” Sanchez said. “They took it personal. We had a great week of practice and it carried over. Basic is a good team.”

Quarterback Micah Bowens went 10 for 10 for 344 yards and five touchdowns for Gorman, and Rome Odunze established a single-season school record with 230 receiving yards on five catches.

Gorman hosts Foothill next week in the Desert Region semifinals.
