Police ID officer who fatally shot casino robbery suspect

Metro Police have released the name of the officer who fatally shot a robbery suspect outside the Bellagio hotel-casino.

Authorities identified 29-year-old Joaquin Escobar as the officer in Friday's shooting that left another officer wounded.

Officers were called after a suspect, identified today by the Clark County Coroner's Office as Michael Charles Cohen, 49, of Las Vegas, reportedly robbed the Bellagio's poker cage area, police said.

Cohen tried to flee by carjacking someone outside, police said.

He came into contact with officers and allegedly pointed his gun at them and fired off at least one round, police said.

Police said Escobar returned fire, striking the suspect.

Cohen died from his injuries Saturday. The wounded officer, who had a bullet-proof vest, was treated and released.

Escobar has been placed on paid administrative leave.
