The Chaparral basketball team accepts the Game of the Year award during the Sun Standout Awards ceremony at South Point on Tuesday, May 21, 2019.

The Las Vegas Sun’s annual showcase of the best in high school sports, the Sun Standout Awards, has been canceled this year as a precaution against the spread of COVID-19.

But while the pandemic may have pushed the event off the calendar until 2021, the Sun’s commitment to spotlighting prep sports in Southern Nevada is undiminished.

Our local athletes did some amazing things both on and off the field, and we’ll proudly be sharing their stories in the Sun and Las Vegas Weekly, our sister publication. The Sun Standout Awards, which were scheduled for May 21 in the South Point Showroom, will return in 2021.

“The health and safety of the students and their families is what’s most important,” said Ray Brewer, the Sun’s managing editor and the awards show host. “While it’s unfortunate that we won’t recognize the accomplishments of these students in person, our coverage will highlight their feats and celebrate the contributions to our community.”

Modeled after ESPN’s ESPY Awards, the Sun’s black-tie-optional event honors the top games, moments, teams, players and more with such awards as Male and Female Athlete of the Year, Scholar Athlete of the Year and Citizen of the Year.

Since debuting after the 2015-16 season, the Sun Standout Awards have been presented to representatives from more than 20 schools, with the evening drawing packed crowds.

Despite the cancellation, the Sun still invites the community to share stories of athletes who deserve recognition. Even though we won’t be announcing winners or giving out awards this year, outstanding things are still happening at the area’s nearly 40 schools and we need your help identifying those for our coverage. Here’s the link to nominate.

“We’ll come back bigger and better with our Sun Standout Awards event in 2021,” Brewer said.
