Police: Officers shoot burglary suspect trying to attack resident

Officers fatally shot a burglary suspect early today who was trying to attack a resident with a hammer, according to Metro Police.

Police dispatchers received a report about 1:20 a.m. of a burglary in progress at a residence in the 5100 block of Spanish Heights Drive, near Tropicana Avenue and Durango Drive, Metro said.

The caller said the suspect was armed and inside the home, police said.

Officers entered through the front door and saw the man trying to attack the resident with a hammer, police said. They fired several shots, striking the suspect, police said.

The suspect, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police did not indicate whether the resident was injured.
