Earth Day anniversary contest offers cash prizes

Earth Day is turning 50 this year, and Clark County residents have a chance to earn some green in celebration of the global event’s golden anniversary.

The Sierra Club Southern Nevada Group is holding an essay and art contest to mark Earth Day’s birthday, with a $500 grand prize, $300 prizes for first-place entries in each of four categories and $80 runner-up prizes in each category.

The theme: “What Earth Day means to me.”

The club will accept entries through March 19 in these categories: Best adult essay (18 and older), best youth essay, best adult artwork and best youth artwork.

To enter, follow these steps:

• Visit sierraclub.org/toiyabe/southern-nevada and click “Enter contest.”

• Print and fill out the entry form.

• Submit your entry and the entry form by email to EarthDay50@[email protected] or by mail to Sierra Club Southern Nevada Group, 3828 Meadows Lane, Las Vegas, NV89107.

Essays should be no more than 500 words, and artwork no larger than 11 by 17 inches. The contest is limited to Clark County residents.

Entries will be judged April 14 by a panel of judges comprising Clark County educators, professional artists and authors, as well as local environmentalists.

Winners will be announced April 22 — the evening of Earth Day — at the Clark County Library Main Theater, at 1401 E. Flamingo Road.

The winning entries also will be published in the Las Vegas Sun.
