A motorist who veered into oncoming traffic last month on U.S. 95 near Scotty’s Junction, slamming into an SUV and killing three Idaho residents, was driving under the influence, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Tyler Kennedy, 32, was jailed in Nye County on five counts of reckless driving; three counts of DUI causing death; two counts of DUI causing substantial injuries; and one count each of possession of drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving with a suspended driver’s license, failing to maintain a lane, and not wearing a seat belt, the patrol said today.

The March 27 crash, which occurred shortly before 4 p.m., about 150 miles northwest of Las Vegas, killed a man, a woman and a child from Victor, Idaho, the patrol said.

Kennedy, of Tolleson, Ariz., who was in a Ford F-150 pickup truck, partially veered into opposing traffic for “unknown reasons,” striking a Toyota Highlander, which was also occupied by two other children, one of whom suffered life-threatening injuries, the patrol said.

Three people died at the scene, the patrol said.
