Person seriously burned in house fire blamed on careless smoking

A person was taken to a hospital with serious burns after a house fire in downtown Las Vegas early today, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials said.

The fire appeared to be the result of careless smoking, officials said.

A neighbor reported the fire about 2 a.m. in the 700 block of North 17th Street.

When firefighters arrived, three occupants were already outside, and one person appeared to have serious burns on their back and arms, official said. Another person was taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, official said.

Nobody else was hurt.

Firefighters found a mattress and bedding on fire in a bedroom and quickly extinguished the blaze, officials said.

A damage estimate was not available.
