League play begins tonight for many high school football teams in Southern Nevada, and in the large-school class 5A, there are a handful of matches that are arguably must-win affairs.

If teams projected to be on the playoff bubble want to reach the postseason, a victory tonight would be a significant first step. Canyon Springs faces off against Legacy, and Foothill travels to Palo Verde in two games of evenly matched opponents.

Wins will be tough to come by the remainder of the season in a classification with powers such as Arbor View, Bishop Gorman, Desert Pines and Liberty. That means tonight — the initial night of 5A games in the new class — could partially define the season.

League play also starts in the class 4A, where favorites Silverado and Shadow Ridge are expected to have no problems with Chaparral and Sierra Vista, respectively. And in the class 3A, Valley tangles with Western, Moapa Valley travels to Rancho, and Pahrump Valley is in Boulder City.

There are also some rivalry games, highlighted by Henderson Bowl between Basic and Green Valley, and the Duel in the Desert pitting Cheyenne and Cimarron-Memorial.
