The Run-in’ Rebels head onto the court for their season opener against Montana State at the Thomas & Mack Center Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2020.

UNLV picked up its third commitment from the transfer portal in two days, as former Ole Miss wing Luis Rodriguez committed to the Scarlet and Gray on Wednesday.

Rodriguez made the announcement via Twitter.

According to reports, Rodriguez visited North Carolina State earlier this month and also heard from programs such as Texas, Oregon, UNR and Louisville.

Rodriguez was a key player at Ole Miss in 2021-22, starting 23 of 32 games and posting 6.6 points and 5.5 rebounds. He brings a defensive-minded approach to the wing positions, as he averaged 1.3 steals and recorded the second-best defensive rating on the team.

A Los Angeles native, Rodriguez rated as a 3-star recruit in the Class of 2018. He played in 25 games as a freshman, then started the first five contests of the 2019-20 season before a broken foot ended his campaign and forced him to take a medical redshirt. Over the past two seasons he has started 51 games.

Because of that redshirt, Rodriguez comes to UNLV with two years of eligibility remaining.

Rodriguez is the fourth transfer to join UNLV since the end of the season. Former Duquesne guard Jackie Johnson was the first to commit on April 9, while Elijah Parquet (Colorado) and Elijah Harkless (Oklahoma) both pledged on Tuesday.

With all the newcomers in the fold, UNLV has quickly accounted for almost all of its scholarships for 2022-23. The team is set to welcome back seven returning players, and Donovan Williams could still opt to come back after testing the NBA Draft process. Those eight, combined with the four transfers, would leave UNLV with one open scholarship spot.
