The Nevada Department of Corrections reported today that dozens of inmates began a hunger strike last week at Ely State Prison.
Thirty-nine prisoners started the strike Thursday, mostly in protest of food portions being served but also includes conditions of confinement, property issues and disciplinary sanctions. Twenty-seven inmates were still refusing food today, the department stated.
The facility is auditing portion sizes at all facilities throughout the state and reviewing the contract with its current food vendor.
Participating inmates are being monitored for weight and other health aspects, according to the report.
The department stated that it takes seriously the health and welfare of inmates in custody and is working to resolve the matter.
