Las Vegas police ID officer involved in fatal weekend shooting

An officer who fatally shot a man armed with an edged weapon on Sunday was identified today as Tate Nelson, according to Metro Police.

The shooting happened about 11:30 p.m. after officers were called to the 600 block of North Bruce Street about an attempted suicide, police said.

Officers found an unresponsive woman at a home, along with the man, police said. They ordered the man to drop the weapon, but he refused, police said.

Nelson fired at the man after he moved toward police, Metro said.

The man and woman were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Nelson, 25, has been with Metro since 2020, police said. He was placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of a review of the incident, police said.
