Woman killed in crash involving six vehicles on west side of Las Vegas

A woman was killed in a traffic collision in which six vehicles were damaged Tuesday afternoon on the west side of Las Vegas, according to a Metro Police news release.

At about 2:30 p.m, an 18-year-old man in a 2007 Toyota Rav 4 was traveling westbound at a high rate of speed on Washington Avenue approaching North Torrey Pines Drive, according to the report. Meanwhile, a woman, 33, driving a 2016 Mazda CX-5 was approaching the same intersection southbound on Torrey Pines. As the Mazda turned left on a green signal, the Toyota failed to stop for a red light at the intersection.

The front of the Toyota hit the left side of the Mazda, and the cars’ momentum pushed them in a southwest direction. The Toyota’s momentum caused the vehicle to strike two others, both of which were stopped at the intersection and pushed them into the cars behind them on the eastbound side of Torrey Pines. The Toyota then came to rest between the other two cars and caught fire. The Mazda came to rest in the right turn lane of eastbound Torrey Pines, the release stated. Another car, a 2010 BMW 335-i also was hit by debris from the collision.

The drivers of both principal vehicles were transported to UMC Trauma for their injuries. The Mazda’s driver died of her injuries at the hospital. The Toyota’s driver was listed in serious condition, according to the release sent lat Tuesday night. He was booked in absentia on reckless driving and DUI-related charges the release stated. The drivers of the other vehicles reported no major injuries.

Police reported that the death marks the 81st traffic-related fatality in jurisdiction in 2022. The collision remains under investigation.
