Vegas Golden Knights coach Peter DeBoer leaves the ice at the end of the first period during an NHL hockey game against the San Jose Sharks in San Jose, Calif., Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021.

Pete DeBoer wasn’t out of a NHL coaching job for long.

Fired by the Golden Knights on May 16 after less than three years behind the bench, DeBoer reportedly will become the Dallas Stars’ next coach, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

DeBoer posted a 98-50-12 record with Vegas, but the Golden Knights struggled with injuries last season and missed the playoffs for the first time in the franchise’s five-year history.

In the COVID-altered season of 2021, Vegas tied the Colorado Avalanche with the most points in the NHL in the 56-game season but lost to the Montreal Canadiens in six games in the Stanley Cup semifinals.

The couldn’t duplicate the success this season, especially with contributors Mark Stone, Max Pacioretty and Alec Martinez missing more than half the year on the injured list.

The Golden Knights last week tabbed Bruce Cassidy as their new coach. Cassidy, formerly with the Bruins, is noted for his work in coaching the power play — something Vegas repeatedly couldn’t get right with DeBoer.
