The final game of last year’s NFL regular season wound up one of the best of the year and will get a sequel eight months later to start the 2022-2023 campaign.

The Las Vegas Raiders will open next season at 1:25 p.m. on Sunday, September 11, in Los Angeles at SoFi Stadium against the Chargers, the NFL revealed Thursday afternoon. The upcoming season’s first game between the AFC West rivals will be highly anticipated after the Raiders edged the Chargers 35-32 as time expired to reach the playoffs in January.

Both teams appear to have upgraded since then with the Raiders adding a pair of likely future Hall of Famers in wide receiver Davante Adams and edge rusher Chandler Jones. The Chargers went on a defensive shopping spree over the offseason, signing top free-agent cornerback J.C. Jackson and trading for former Raider linebacker Khalil Mack.

Las Vegas’ 2022-2023 home debut will come the next week in the same Sunday time slot when it hosts Arizona. The Cardinals will notably be without wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins as he serves a six-game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

This is the first time since the Raiders moved to Las Vegas that they will not be featured on Monday Night Football to start their home schedule. Rumors suggested they would again get that time slot all week, with Jones even acknowledging it via twitter, but they turned out to unsubstantiated.

The Raiders’ primetime debut will have to wait until Week 5’s Monday Night Football on Oct. 10 when they travel to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs. With a Week 4 game hosting the Denver Broncos scheduled for Oct. 2, the Raiders will meet divisional rivals in three of their first five games.

Las Vegas’ bye will follow, as they have Week 6 off before finishing the regular season with contests in 12 consecutive weeks. The team’s other three primetime slots all fall consecutively in that window — a Thursday Night Football game at the Los Angeles Rams on Dec. 8, a Sunday Night Football appearance hosting the New England Patriots on Dec. 18 and a Christmas Eve tilt at the Pittsburgh Steelers on Dec. 24.
