Vehicles involved in a fatal shooting are towed during an investigation on East Flamingo Road, near the UNLV campus Thursday, Oct. 13, 2022. Metro Officer Truong Thai, 49, was killed in the shooting.

Metro Police have identified the second officer involved in a shooting earlier this week that resulted in the death of one of his colleagues.

Officer Ryan Gillihan, 32, and Officer Truong Thai responded to a domestic disturbance Thursday near the UNLV campus, where they encountered an armed man in a vehicle near Flamingo Road and University Center Drive. The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Tyson Hampton, opened fire and the officers fired back.

Thai, 49, suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the torso and died at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo said earlier this week. A civilian woman was also injured in the shootout, and is expected to survive.

Hampton fled and was later taken to the Clark County detention Center after receiving medical attention, police said.

Gillihan has been a Metro police officer since 2017, and has been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending review of the shooting, police said.

Thai had been employed with Metro since 1999, and was a “commendable officer,” according to Lombardo.

Hampton appeared in court Friday before a hearing master who found probable cause to keep him jailed without bail pending arraignment Tuesday on eight felony charges including murder and attempted murder. He also faces a misdemeanor domestic battery count.
