The UNLV basketball team is busy preparing for the start of the 2022-23 season, but behind the scenes the coaching staff is looking even further ahead.

On Monday, the program landed a commitment from its first recruit in the Class of 2023, as junior college forward Robert Whaley pledged to the Scarlet and Gray.

Whaley made the announcement via Twitter.

Whaley enjoyed a productive freshman campaign at the College of Southern Idaho last year, averaging 10.9 points and 4.9 rebounds in 18.1 minutes per game. The burly, 6-foot-6 lefty was especially effective on the interior, as he shot 63.2% inside the arc.

As a senior at Bountiful High School (Bountiful, Utah) in 2020-21, Whaley posted 20.4 points and 9.4 rebounds per game, but was an unranked prospect. After his first season at Southern Idaho and some impressive performances in summer showcases this year (including one in Las Vegas), Division I offers started coming in.

Whaley chose UNLV over Boise State, Utah State, Wichita State and Utah Valley.

Whaley will play one more year at Southern Idaho, then join UNLV for the 2023-24 season. He will have two years of eligibility with the Scarlet and Gray.
