A dust alert has been issued for today because of high winds, according to the Clark County Department of Environmental Sustainability.

The National Weather Service has also issued a flash flood watch for the Las Vegas area from 10 p.m. through Saturday night.

Today, unhealthy levels of dust for sensitive groups of people are imminent or occurring, county officials said.

Winds today are expected to be 8 to 14 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph, according to the weather service.

Airborne dust can aggravate respiratory diseases, and under windy conditions, people with heart or lung disease, older adults and children may feel better staying indoors, county officials said.

Tips for limiting dust exposure include avoiding exertion while outdoors, keeping windows and doors closed, running household air conditioners and changing dirty filters, officials said.

The flash flood watch covers Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas and Boulder City, as well as Mesquite, Overton and Moapa, according to the weather service.

Multiple rounds of thunderstorms are possible late tonight through Saturday night, bringing up to an inch or more of rain in some areas, the weather service said.

There is a 10% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3 p.m. in Las Vegas, increasing to 50% tonight and into Saturday, according to the weather service forecast.

The forecast calls for a chance for rain continuing through Wednesday.
