The high school football season hits a milestone tonight: The start of league play.

Defending state champion Bishop Gorman showed it is the powerhouse we thought it was, marching into northwest Las Vegas and taking care of business, winning 63-0 against previously undefeated Arbor View.

There shouldn’t be an empty seat on the Arbor View side of the stadium with officials encouraging supporters to wear red to help create a home field edge. Just don’t expect Gorman — which has just one loss since 2008 to a Nevada school — to back down, especially coming off a 70-10 victory last week against a Georgia school on ESPNU.

Gorman is the heavy favorite, but Arbor View is expected to put up a fight. The Aggies have wins against opponents from Utah and Arizona, and have Division I recruits on each side of the ball.

They also have the attention of Gorman, whose coach Brent Browner said last week that “Arbor View is one of the best teams in the state. They are coming up. They are dialed in.”

It’s not the lone class 5A game on the docket, as Liberty travels to Faith Lutheran, and Legacy takes on Canyon Springs. Thursday, Palo Verde edged out Foothill 27-26 in the 5A opener.

Green Valley, another 5A team, won’t open league play until next week. Instead, the Gators are playing at Basic in the 30th edition of Henderson Bowl — the annual game between the initial two high schools in Henderson.

Green Valley has a four-game winning streak in the series, but the Gators have struggled out of the gate and enter tonight’s game searching for their first win.

Class 4A Basic, on the other hand, has had a tremendous start in outscoring opponents 170-16 and posting a 5-0 record.

The class 3A schedule is highlighted by Boulder City traveling to Pahrump Valley in what’s expected to be a low-scoring affair. Boulder City won 8-6 at Virgin Valley last week; Pahrump Valley fell 7-6 to Moapa Valley.
