Former UNLV football player Austin Ajiake has been named the Mountain West Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 2022-23, the conference announced Thursday.
Ajiake graduated in 2022, then capped his five-year collegiate career by turning in a superlative senior season on the field. The Fresno native served as a key leader for the Scarlet and Gray and led the MWC with 132 tackles. He also recorded 4.0 sacks and intercepted two passes, earning a spot on the All-Mountain West first team.
In order to be eligible for the award, athletes must have a 3.5 cumulative GPA. Ajiake was named to the All-MWC academic team five times in his career and was a three-time MWC scholar athlete.
Wyoming cross-country star Katelyn Mitchem was the MWC Women’s Scholar Athlete of the Year. She and Ajiake will each receive postgraduate scholarships worth $2,500.
Ajiake graduated with a bachelor’s degree in urban studies and is now studying for a master’s in urban leadership.
