Two killed in officer-involved shootings last week in Las Vegas

Metro Police on Tuesday released details on a pair of unrelated officer-involved fatal shootings that occurred Friday in Las Vegas.

In one incident, officers responded to a report of a man with a gun near the intersection of Nellis Boulevard and Bonanza Road at about 11 a.m. Friday.

The caller had reported that a suspect, later identified as William Konkol, 60, had pointed the gun at him. Arriving officers located Konkol and attempted to conduct a vehicle stop near the intersection of Prince Lane and Charleston Boulevard. Konkol refused to stop, and a vehicle pursuit began, according to the report.

The suspect’s vehicle was forcefully stopped near Colusa Circle and Sacramento Drive. As officers exited their vehicles, Konkol took out a handgun and fired once, the report states. Officers returned fire at Konkol, who was still inside his vehicle.

The suspect then drove toward the officers, and they fired again. Konkol then crashed into a brick wall in front of a house, according to the report.

Medical responders pronounced Konkol dead at the scene.

In a separate incident, officers responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon near the 10500 block of Angel Dreams Avenue at about 7:44 p.m. Friday.

Arriving officers contacted two victims, a man and a woman, who stated the suspect, later identified as Paul Horn, Jr., 58, had confronted them about speeding in the neighborhood while being armed with a handgun, the report stated.

Officers went to Horn’s residence and established containment around his home. Officers used a patrol vehicle’s public address system to ask Horn to surrender peacefully.

Horn exited his house brandishing a handgun. He ignored verbal commands from officers and walked toward them, police stated. He then shot himself, and an officer simultaneously fired his rifle, striking Horn, according to the report.

Horn was taken to UMC Trauma by medical personnel, where he was later pronounced dead.
