UNLV Rebels forward Kalib Boone practices with the team at Mendenhall Center Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2023.

On Wednesday, the UNLV basketball team held its first official practice ahead of the 2023-24 season. On Sunday, one of the projected starters was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Senior Kalib Boone, an offseason transfer from Oklahoma State, was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with misdemeanor DUI, according to Las Vegas Justice Court records.

Boone is a 6-foot-9 post player who was expected to be UNLV’s starting center this season as the team vies for its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2013. He spent the first four years of his college career at Oklahoma State, where he averaged 10.6 points and 4.9 rebounds last season.

Boone was not at practice on Monday, though head coach Kevin Kruger said his absence wasn’t because of the arrest but due to a previously scheduled tutoring session.

Kruger said the program is aware of Boone’s arrest and is in the process of deciding on a course of action.

“We’re just gathering information right now,” Kruger said. “Of course we talked to him, but right now we’re gathering information, and as the dust settles we’ll go from there.”

Kruger said that he does expect Boone to practice with the team while his legal situation unfolds.

“He’ll be here,” Kruger said.

UNLV’s first game is Nov. 8 against Southern University at the Thomas & Mack Center.
