School was canceled today at two Valley elementary schools and staffing was low at at least one high school because of teacher absences.

The Clark County School District confirmed that Givens Elementary in Summerlin and Sewell Elementary in Henderson were closed today.

Basic High School in Henderson had low staffing but remained open, the district said.

“There are an unexpected number of licensed staff/teachers absent from school today and we have made the difficult decision to not have school today,” said near-identical letters to parents from the principals at Givens and Sewell.

The absences follow unexpected low staffing in the last week at Southeast Career and Technical Academy, Gibson Elementary and Monaco Middle.

Gibson was closed on Tuesday and some students were gathered in large common areas at SECTA last Friday and Monaco on Wednesday.

The single-day, concentrated teacher absence spikes come amid continuing contract negotiations between CCSD and the Clark County Education Association teacher union.
