What to know before heading to Allegiant Stadium for the Super Bowl in Las Vegas

Many of the fans converging on Allegiant Stadium Sunday for the Super Bowl will be in the venue for their first time.

Navigating their way around the “Death Star” — the stadium’s nickname coined by Raiders owner Mark Davis because of its futuristic shape — shouldn’t be a problem because the NFL will have hosts and signage at every turn to guide them.

There are a few policies to prepare for today. We’ve accumulated a list of stadium and NFL protocols to aid fans in their gameday experience.

Bag policy

The NFL is encouraging fans to not bring any type of bag to the game.

Those who need the extra storage will need a clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag that doesn’t exceed 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches, a one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag or a small bag — not to exceed 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches — without a handle.

Exceptions will be made for medically necessary items, but only after thorough inspection at a specific gate, the NFL said.

Prohibited bags include purses larger than 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches, coolers, briefcases, nonclear backpacks, nonclear fanny packs, nonclear drawstrings, luggage of any kind, computer bags, binocular cases and camera bags.

Seat cushions with pockets, arm rests, metal supports, zippers, compartments or covers are also not allowed under the NFL’s bag policies.

More prohibited items

The NFL warns it can ban any item it deems dangerous or inappropriate at its discretion.

The league says to leave banners, signs, noisemakers and horns, whistles, pom poms, shakers with stick handles and throwable sports equipment — like footballs or beach balls — at home.

Video recording devices, tripods, monopods, selfie sticks and drones are also a no-go, along with iPads or tablets, but cameras and binoculars with lenses smaller than 6 inches are permitted.

If you arrive with a prohibited item, there’s storage at the stadium, the league said.

Access

Only Super Bowl ticket holders will be allowed on the Allegiant Stadium grounds.

There are three fan entries into the stadium, which should be listed on tickets. Those in doubt should ask a host for directions.

A full map can be found on the NFL OnePass app, which is available for download on the App Store and Google Play. The maps also show locations for onsite activities slated in parking lots around the stadium.

Cashless venue

Allegiant Stadium became the first American professional sports venue to open cashless, so save those dollar bills for another place.

“Cashless transactions significantly increase our speed of service, meaning shorter lines and guests getting back to their seats faster,” according to the Allegiant Stadium website.

Visitors can pay for items using valid debit or credit cards and mobile wallets, including Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay. Bartenders and vendors can still accept cash tips.

Cash-to-card kiosks are located at various places on each level of the stadium for guests to convert their cash bills into a prepaid debit card. Those converted debit cards can be used outside of the stadium, also.

The cards are not reloadable and can be filled up to $500. There is no transaction fee.

Kiosks can be found in the northwest entry lobby; the concourses behind sections 102 and 124; the Coors Light Landing behind section 203; and the concourses behind sections 318 and 341.

Allegiant Stadium is home to multiple checkout-free concessions that use vision cognition technology with machine learning to offer a “frictionless shopping experience.” The stores have shelves of packaged snacks and refrigerated drinks behind two small gates.

Shoppers can tap or insert a debit or credit card when entering the store, pick up their products and leave. Cards will be charged based on the product choices.

Checkout-free concessions are located behind sections 108, 116, 130 and 138; sections 203 and 247; and behind sections 312 and 338.

Merchandise

For those looking to purchase Super Bowl memorabilia, various NFL Shops will be scattered throughout the resort corridor at Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur, New York-New York, MGM Grand, Tropicana, the Horseshoe, the Linq, Harrah’s, Wynn Las Vegas, the Strat and the Palms.

They are stocked with items featuring the Super Bowl 58 logo, including footballs, hoodies, team jerseys and more.

Parking

There is no on-site parking at Allegiant Stadium for the Super Bowl because the lots will be filled with fan activities and performance stages. The NFL is encouraging those driving to the game to park at one of the nearby Strip hotels — such as Mandalay Bay, the Delano, the Luxor or Excalibur — and walk to Allegiant Stadium using the Hacienda Avenue bridge over Interstate 15. The bridge is closed to vehicular traffic for major events at Allegiant Stadium.

You can reserve a parking spot at some Strip resorts in advance.

A spot in the Mandalay Bay garage off Frank Sinatra Drive costs $100 for Sunday’s game. The Luxor is charging $75.

Many other properties, like the Excalibur Event Garage, previously sold out.

Another option is to secure a spot through the parking.com website, which on Thursday was listing prices from $40 at the Tropicana to $250 at a private lot on Valley View Boulevard, just west of the stadium.

Public transportation

For those staying near the central or north Strip, the Las Vegas Monorail, Mandalay Bay Express Tram and local Deuce will be their best friend in getting within a short walk to the stadium. Monorail trains run from the MGM Grand to the Sahara, with stops in between, and arrive every four to eight minutes between 7 a.m. and 3 a.m. Friday through Sunday. A 24-hour pass costs $13.45, but one-way trips are as low as $6, and children under 5 ride free.

The Mandalay Bay Express Tram is free, servicing the titular resort, Luxor and Excalibur from 10 a.m. to midnight daily.

Along Las Vegas Boulevard are stops for the Regional Transportation Commission’s Deuce line. A two-hour bus pass will cost $6, and a 24-hour pass will be $8, according to the RTC website. Tickets can be purchased on-board Deuce buses, at select ticket vending machines and on the rideRTC or Uber apps.

Exact change is required when purchasing passes on-board and at ticket vending machines.

Rideshare

A rideshare drop-off zone will be located on West Mesa Vista Avenue — between businesses like Prudential Overall Supply and Pioneer Wholesale — near Entry 2 at Allegiant Stadium. Passengers can also be dropped off at the rideshare sections of any Strip property and use the Hacienda Avenue bridge to access the complex.

Uber will use the West Mesa Vista drop-off zone for its passengers, but will pick up riders from the Mandalay Bay/Delano rideshare zone, according to the company.

Uber drivers can earn an extra $10 on every eligible dropoff at the Super Bowl’s designated zone from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, and an extra $25 for every pickup from Mandalay Bay/Delano from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m.

With an increased demand for riders and incentives for drivers, expect event surcharge fees starting at $10 on Sunday. Uber was charging an additional $20 for pickups and $10 for dropoffs during last year’s Super Bowl in Glendale, Ariz.

For Lyft, the designated drop-off location will be on West Diablo Drive between Valley View Boulevard and Wynn Road. Riders should enter “Allegiant Stadium” directly into the application to help route drivers to the zone, the company said on its website. The designated pickup location will be at the Mandalay Bay/Delano rideshare area, which can be accessed using the Hacienda Avenue bridge.
