Davante Adams, Maxx Crosby out with injuries against Browns

Raiders Practice at Allegiant II

Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams (17) stretches during a training camp open practice at Allegiant Stadium Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024.

The Raiders’ injury situation has taken a turn for the worse ahead of Sunday’s game hosting the Cleveland Browns.

Las Vegas’ two best players, wide receiver Davante Adams and edge rusher Maxx Crosby, were ruled out Friday morning by coach Antonio Pierce. Tight end Michael Mayer and right tackle Thayer Munford will also miss the game.

“We’ll see what happens come Sunday but we feel really good with (the depth) we have,” coach Antonio Pierce said.

Crosby suffered a high ankle sprain in a victory over the Baltimore Ravens two weeks ago but played through it in last week’s loss to the Carolina Panthers. He was clearly less than 100%, however, and might have tweaked the ankle to make it worse though he spoke optimistically about his recovery earlier this week at the Raiders’ Henderson headquarters.

The Week 4 showdown with Cleveland will mark the first game Crosby has missed in his six-year NFL career.

A rotation of Tyree Wilson, Janarius Robinson, Charles Snowden and K’Lavon Chaisson will likely share the duties of making up for Crosby’s absence.

“Don’t worry about being Maxx Crosby,” Pierce said of his message to the group. “Don’t put a cape on…Just give us your best. Don’t try to be the hero of the game. Just try to be a team player.”

Adams had also been yet to miss to a game in silver and black since joining the franchise two years ago. He was a late addition to the injury report after Thursday’s practice where he suffered a hamstring injury.

Adams is the Raiders’ leading receiver through three games this season with 18 catches for 209 yards.

“Collectively no one is going to be Davante Adams,” Pierce said. “I don’t need another Davante. There’s only one. I just need the best version of Jakobi Meyers, Tre Tucker, DJ Turner and the rest of those receivers.”

Munford exited the Panthers' game in the first quarter with knee and ankle injuries and has not practiced all week. Of the four starters ruled out Friday, he was the only one that came as no surprise.

Mayer is not hurt but has been absent from the Raiders’ facility over the last two days dealing with a personal matter. Pierce declined to provide any further details.

The Raiders are no longer favored to beat the Browns after all the announced absences. The betting market moved Las Vegas from as high as a 2-point favorite to Cleveland to now as low as a 1.5-point underdogs.
