The city of Las Vegas and homebuilder Century Communities will break ground Thursday on a park honoring Metro Police Officer Igor Soldo, completing a lasting tribute to the two officers killed in a 2014 ambush.

The ceremony for Igor Soldo Memorial Park is scheduled for 9 a.m. at Iron Mountain Road and Alpine Ridge Way in the Skye Canyon area of northwest Las Vegas. Mayor Shelley Berkley, Ward 6 Councilwoman Nancy Brune and representatives of Metro and Century Communities are expected to attend.

Officers Igor Soldo, 31, and Alyn Beck, 41, were shot and killed in cold blood June 8, 2014, when a married couple with anti-government extremist views ambushed them during their lunch break at a CiCi’s Pizza restaurant on the east side of Las Vegas. The brazen midday attack on two officers in uniform shook the city and drew an outpouring of grief from the community.

Soldo, who was born in Bosnia, had dreamed of going into law enforcement since childhood. He had served with Metro for eight years and left behind a wife and infant son.

Century Communities is funding construction of the park under a development agreement with the city. The Colorado-based homebuilder serves as master developer of Skye Canyon, a 1,700-acre planned community in northwest Las Vegas where the park will be built.

“This park ensures Officer Soldo’s life and service will be remembered for generations to come,” Century Communities Division President Shane Markuson said. “We are grateful to the city of Las Vegas, Skye Canyon and everyone else who advocated for this park and helped bring it to fruition.”

The park will feature a playground, water play area, soccer fields and pickleball courts. It is scheduled to open in early 2027.

Beck, who served 14 years with Metro and left behind a wife and three children, is honored by Alyn Beck Memorial Park at 9220 Brent Lane in the northwest valley, about 7 miles from the Soldo park. The park opened Jan. 31, 2020, and was funded by the Olympia Companies, Skye Canyon’s original master developer.

“Thank you to the Century Communities team for funding this beautiful tribute to Officer Soldo,” Brune said. “I look forward to opening this new park and seeing children playing and families enjoying being together.”
