Las Vegas hospital touts new surgical system as major innovation for patients' well-being

A surgery was successfully performed using a new artificial cervical disc replacement system for the first time in Nevada, Southern Hills Hospital & Medical Center reported in a news release. 

The Synergy Disc was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in February and is the first treatment of its type designed to improve spinal alignment with a built-in six-degree curve, a previously unsolvable challenge in cervical spine surgery, the release stated. 

“This is transformative for spine care in our community,” Southern Hills Hospital Chief Operating Officer Jason Desais stated. “By performing this surgery with the new disc replacement system, we are advancing patient outcomes and helping lead the evolution of spine care in our community.” 

More than just replacing a damaged disc, the system helps restore the natural curve of the neck, allowing the head to sit in a healthier, more balanced position, the release stated. Instead of fusing bones together, limiting movement, the use of artifical discs helps preserve motion, improving quality of life for patients. 

“My goal has always been to bring the most advanced and evidence-based surgical options to my patients here in Nevada,” Dr. Andrew S. Lee stated. “The Synergy Disc ... allows us to address not just the disc itself, but also the alignment of the cervical spine in a way that no other approved device has done before.”
