NFL veterans Daunte Culpepper, Ahman Green and Dominic Rhodes can now add modeling to their distinguished resumes. The months leading up to the second United Football League season have played out quite a bit different than the ones before the league’s first year to Las Vegas coach Jim Fassel. Fassel said he spent much of his time before the inaugural season trying to convince players to give the league a shot. It wasn’t anything like that in 2010 as the Locomotives began assembling their roster.

Tim Rattay dropped back to pass and glanced downfield to see receiver Andrae Thurman wide open after breaking out of a cluttered secondary. Rattay launched a spiral that landed right in Thurman’s hands. It was just like old times Friday afternoon at Sam Boyd Stadium for Rattay and Thurman.

As a professional football coach for more than 25 years, Jim Fassel has worked out hundreds of prospective players. None of them have run a faster time in the 40-yard dash than cornerback Michael Ray Garvin. Fassel and the Las Vegas Locomotives selected Garvin in the second round of 2010 United Football League Draft on Wednesday night.

The joy of a championship always comes with a companion — the pressure to defend it the next year. The Las Vegas Locomotives, the United Football League’s inaugural champions, are becoming familiar with that as the league inches toward the start of its second season in September. “Everyone is trying to close the gap on us,” said Amp Lee, Locomotives running backs coach. “So, we’re trying to improve and we’ve got to continue to get our roster and our personnel better.”

A few hours before the kickoff of the United Football League Championship Game, Las Vegas coach Jim Fassel had to ask cornerback Isaiah Trufant if he thought he could play. Trufant sat out of practice all week with two pulled groins and was listed as questionable on the injury report. Fassel won’t soon forget Trufant’s answer. “I’ll give you everything I got for as long as I got,” Trufant told Fassel.
The question caught J.P. Losman off guard. Asked when he last competed in a championship game, the Las Vegas Locomotives quarterback stammered for a few moments before coming up with an answer. “I’ve never really been in a championship game,” Losman said. “I don’t know how many players really have been.” That will change Friday when Losman leads the Las Vegas Locomotives into the United Football League Championship game against the Florida Tuskers at Sam Boyd Stadium
United Football League Commissioner Michael Huyghue has a message to all of the league’s naysayers and detractors. This year, the league’s inaugural season, was only the beginning. To illustrate his point, Huyghue used a metaphor. “In many ways, it was a dress rehearsal for us — the way a show opens on Broadway with previews and then opens to the full cast,” Huyghue said. “That’s what it was for us. It was a way to take a fairly well-buttoned up process and look at it more closely in sort of a test audience.”
Locomotives coach Jim Fassel wanted his team to play a complete game Friday night in preparation for their appearance in the UFL Championship Game next week. Fassel got that and a lot more in Las Vegas’ 41-7 rout of the New York Sentinels. “What was most important to me was we didn’t come out and play a sloppy game,” Fassel said. “I was on them hard all week and they responded as they always have all year. We just made things happen tonight.” The Locomotives won the game without the services of starting quarterback J.P. Losman, who rested a broken ...
The Las Vegas Locomotives won their last game in dramatic fashion. Trailing 7-6 headed into the fourth quarter, the Locomotives scored 10 points against the California Redwoods in the final 12 minutes to clinch a spot in the UFL Championship Game. “It feels great,” Las Vegas quarterback J.P. Losman said after the game. “It’s a big relief.” The Locomotives will face the Florida Tuskers on Nov. 20 at Sam Boyd Stadium for the title. But before the players can become too excited about a chance to become the league’s inaugural champions, Las Vegas (3-2) takes on the New York Sentinels ...
