The crowds that turned out to bet on the Super Bowl yesterday in Las Vegas awed legendary oddsmaker Jimmy Vaccaro. Vaccaro, who’s spent nearly 40 years in the betting industry, had never seen a turnout quite like Sunday’s.

Super Bowl falls short of ratings record

    February 4, 2013

Between a partial power outage, overly excited quarterback and a game that suddenly turned from snoozer to sizzler, CBS had its hands full with the Super Bowl. The game fell short of setting a viewership record, but it stands as the third most-watched program in U.S. television history.

Super Bowl prop bet report card: Brewer goes 4-5, misses safety bet again

    February 4, 2013

Another safety. And with four seconds left in the game. The gambling gods were shining on a few lucky handicappers late in Sunday’s Super Bowl. Of course, I wasn’t included in that good fortune. Last week, I gave readers my picks for a few proposition wagers, including one predication I felt strongly about. There was no way there would be a safety.

  • Louisiana board: Recent work not related to Super Bowl power outage

    February 4, 2013

A lawyer for the state board that oversees the Superdome says Sunday night's power outage during the Super Bowl does not appear to be related to work done on the stadium's electrical system in December.

Las Vegas sports books profit once again on Super Bowl

    February 3, 2013

The lights in Las Vegas sports books should stay on for the foreseeable future. The Baltimore Ravens' 34-31 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl wasn’t the best result for Las Vegas. It wasn’t the worst, either.

A lights-out performance: With 3 TD passes, Flacco leads Ravens back to the top

    February 3, 2013

From blowout to blackout to shootout, Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens had just enough power to survive one of the most electric Super Bowls ever. The outage flipped a switch for the San Francisco 49ers, but the Ravens used a last-gasp defensive stand to hold on Sunday night, 34-31. For a Super Bowl with so many subplots, it almost had to end this way.

Live blog: Niners’ charge falls short; Ravens hang on for 34-31 victory

    February 3, 2013

A power outage at the Super Bowl put the nation's biggest sporting event on hold for more than a half-hour Sunday, interrupting an otherwise electric, back-and-forth game that ended with Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens as NFL champions thanks to a 34-31 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

Kaepernick is silver bullet in pistol offense for 49ers

    February 3, 2013

The elusive presence of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick figures to be a unique challenge for the Ravens defense today. Should they fail to contain the 49ers’ unpredictable read-option pistol offense at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, the Super Bowl could prove just as difficult as earlier games against mobile signal-callers.

Ravens’ Ray Rice wonders if 49ers can cover him

    January 31, 2013

In the Super Bowl of brotherly love, neither the 49ers nor the Baltimore Ravens have fired salvos at one another this week. The one possible exception is the low-boil, long-distance chippy exchanges between Ravens running back Ray Rice and the 49ers defense.

    January 31, 2013

Here’s what we’ll keep our eyes on during the Super Bowl Sunday:

Good or bad, Super Bowl halftimes have produced some memorable shows

    January 31, 2013

I was on the phone with my brother the other day talking about the Super Bowl. I mentioned to him that I am writing a column about the all-time memorable Super Bowl moments. “You have to have ‘Be Bop Bamboozled’ in there,” he said. “Of course,” I said.
