Letter to the editor:

Don’t compare this to lynching

Impeachment was included in the Constitution specifically for a person like President Donald Trump, who thinks he’s above the law.

Whether you agree with it or not, it’s a lawful process. When Trump compares it to a “lynching” and other citizens agree with him, it shows ignorance about lynchings. So here’s a snapshot of a real lynching:

Imagine your son being asleep in bed when all of a sudden, two men tear him from the covers and kidnap him. They drag him to a riverbank and beat him, only stopping when the bones in his face are so broken that he’s unrecognizable. And when this 14-year-old child has the audacity to still be alive, one of the assailants pulls out a weapon and shoots the child in the head. They then use barbed wire to tie him to a large metal fan, and throw his broken and mutilated body into the river.

That the person who holds the highest office in the land doesn't know the different between a lynching and an impeachment inquiry is disgusting. It shows how insensitive he is and how little he cares about history. Lynchings were among the most egregiously unlawful acts ever committed in American history, and an impeachment is a lawful part of the Constitution. There’s no comparison.

It’s also unsettling that the president would use the term just so he can play the victim and gain sympathy.
